Mods What is a mod, you ask? A mod is a set of gamefiles altered by the fans, they can be installed next to the existing game and with the ModSwapper tool, you can switch between different mods. These mods change the way the game is played, they can change and/or add units, buildings, wonders, tile improvements, etc, change and improve game concepts such as the AI, diplomacy, user interface, etc and even add new features through a scripting language. For more details on mods and how to make them, see the Modification section and Creation Forum of this site. The only thing you really need to know about mods to be able to participate in these tournaments is how to install them. Therefore, for every tournament that uses a mod (which will be the mayority), links to the forum thread and download location as well as installation instructions for that mod are provided below, to make it as easy as possible for you to participate. Note that for every tournament, regardless of what mod is used, you will need to have patch v1.11 and the ModSwapper utility installed, both of which can be found in the Apolyton Directory (note that you can play without ModSwapper if necessary to but it's strongly recommended that you don't). Installation InstructionsNote: all folder paths mentioned below are relative paths from the main CtP2 folder, the folder in which you installed CtP2. By default this is usually C:\Program Files\Activision\Call to Power 2.
Tournament 1: Original Game (no instructions) 1) Make sure you have the patch (v1.11) and ModSwapper (v1.12) installed. You can download these from the CtP2 Files section of the Directory. 2) Open the file ctp2_program\ctp2\userprofile.txt and look for the line that starts with DebugSlic. Make sure this is set to No, so the line should read DebugSlic=No. 3) Download the Super Apolyton Pack from the Apolyton Directory, here. 4) Unzip (see here) the file you downloaded into your main CtP2 folder. When you're prompted if you want to overwrite battleview.ldl and scenarioeditor.ldl, confirm this. 5) If you have a non-English or non-German version of CTP2, you must copy all files and folders from the 'english' or 'german' folder (depending on which language you prefer) into your own language folder in order for the Pack to work. (Hopefully a French version of the game will also become available at some point in the future) 6) Start Modswapper. You should now see the option "Apolyton Pack! CTP2 the way it should be" next to the existing options ("Original Game" and maybe others, depending on what other mods you already installed). Whenever you want to start a new Apolyton Pack game or continue an old game that was started with the Apolyton Pack, you will have to choose this option in ModSwapper before you hit 'Launch' to start the game. 7) It is advised to open the chat menu (with the '-key) and type /reloadslic immediately after loading the downloaded save game. This will prevent weird messages (such as "noyon") from showing up. This only needs to happen once per game and only for the tournament games and other games which you receive from other people, not after subsequent saves/reloads or with new games started with the Apolyton Pack. 8) If you have any questions, comments, problems, suggestions, etc related to this mod, feel free to let the creator Dale (and everyone else) know in the Super Apolyton Pack forum thread. Installing GoodMod1 (for Apolyton Pack) v0.993 (If you already have Super Apolyton Pack v2.0 installed (for example because you participated in Tournament 2), you can skip steps 3-6) 1) Make sure you have the patch (v1.11) and ModSwapper (v1.12) installed. 7) Download GoodMod1 from the Apolyton Directory, here. 8) Unzip (see here) the file you downloaded into your main CtP2 folder. When you're prompted if you want to overwrite battleview.ldl and some other files, confirm this. 9) If you have a non-English or non-German version of CTP2, you must copy all files and folders from the 'english' or 'german' folder (depending on which language you prefer) into your own language folder in order for the GoodMod to work. 10) Start Modswapper. You should now see 5 new options, all starting with "GoodMod for", next to the existing options ("Original Game", "Apolyton Pack! CTP2 the way it should be" and maybe others, depending on what other mods you already installed). Whenever you want to start a new GoodMod game or continue an old game that was started with the GoodMod, you will have to choose one of these options in ModSwapper before you hit 'Launch' to start the game. For this Tournament you need to select the option "GoodMod for Apolyton Pack V2.0! CTP2 the way it should be". Note that all these versions of GoodMod are independent from each other, so if you start a game with GoodMod for CityMod2, you must always start CtP2 with the GoodMod for CityMod2 to continue this game, you can't switch to GoodMod for Medieval Pack v2.2 halfway through. Also note that with the above instructions, only the two Apolyton Pack options will work. In order to be able to play the options for the Medieval Pack or CityMod2, you will need to download the appropriate mod first. Medieval Pack can be found on Wes's website, which is hosted by Apolyton. CityMod2 can be found in the Files Section. 11) It is advised to open the chat menu (with the '-key) and type /reloadslic immediately after loading the downloaded save game. This will prevent weird messages (such as "noyon") from showing up. This only needs to happen once per game and only for the tournament games and other games which you receive from other people, not after subsequent saves/reloads or with new games started with the GoodMod. 12) If you have any questions, comments, problems, suggestions, etc related to the Apolyton Pack, feel free to let the creator Dale (and everyone else) know in the Super Apolyton Pack forum thread. If you have any questions, comments, problems, suggestions, etc related to the GoodMod, feel free to let the creator Martin Gühmann (and everyone else) know in the GoodMod forum thread. Installing Cradle of Civilizations v1.32 1) Make sure you have the patch (v1.11) and ModSwapper (v1.12) installed. You can download these from the CtP2 Files section of the Directory. 2) Open the file ctp2_program\ctp2\userprofile.txt and look for the line that starts with DebugSlic. Make sure this is set to No, so the line should read DebugSlic=No. 3) Download the Cradle of Civilizations mod from the Apolyton Directory, here (make sure you download the 'second file' as well). 4) Unzip (see here) the primary file you downloaded (cradle_allfiles.zip) into your main CtP2 folder. If you're prompted if you want to overwrite files (e.g. battleview.ldl), confirm this. 5) Unzip the secondary file you downloaded (cradle_update.zip) into your main CtP2 folder as well. You will probably be prompted if you want to overwrite a whole bunch of files (all starting with the prefix 'CRA_' or similar), confirm this (click the 'Yes to all' button if this is option in the overwrite-warning message to automatically overwrite all files). 6) If you have a non-English of CTP2, you must copy all files and folders from the 'english' folder into your own language folder in order for Cradle to work. 7) Start Modswapper. You should now see the option "CRADLE 1.32" next to the existing options ("Original Game" and maybe others, depending on what other mods you already installed). Whenever you want to start a new Cradle game or continue an old game that was started with the Cradle mod, you will have to choose this option in ModSwapper before you hit 'Launch' to start the game. Note that there are also other options for Cradle visible in ModSwapper: CRADLE Ultra Gigantic Maps v1.32 and 3 so-called 'Victory options': Birth of an Empire, Global Empire and SETI Colony - see the Cradle readme files for details on these - suffice to say that you shouldn't use these for the Tournament). 8) It is advised to open the chat menu (with the '-key) and type /reloadslic immediately after loading the downloaded save game. This will prevent weird messages (such as "noyon") from showing up. This only needs to happen once per game and only for the tournament games and other games which you receive from other people, not after subsequent saves/reloads or with new games started with the Cradle mod. 9) If you have any questions, comments, problems, suggestions, etc related to this mod, feel free to let the creator hexagonian (and everyone else) know in the Cradle v1.32 forum thread. Installing Medieval Pack II v2.2 1) Make sure you have the patch (v1.11) and ModSwapper (v1.12) installed. You can download these from the CtP2 Files section of the Directory. 2) Open the file ctp2_program\ctp2\userprofile.txt and look for the line that starts with DebugSlic. Make sure this is set to No, so the line should read DebugSlic=No. 3) Download Medieval Pack II (aka MedMod) from the Apolyton Directory, here (make sure you download the 'second file' as well). 4) Unzip (see here) the primary file you downloaded (medmod_texts_pics_and_videos.zip) into your main CtP2 folder. If you're prompted if you want to overwrite files (e.g. battleview.ldl), confirm this. 5) Unzip the secondary file you downloaded (medmod_sprites_and_sounds.zip) into your main CtP2 folder as well. You will probably be prompted if you want to overwrite a whole bunch of files (all starting with the prefix 'CRA_' or similar), confirm this (click the 'Yes to all' button if this is option in the overwrite-warning message to automatically overwrite all files). 6) If you have a non-English of CTP2, you must copy all files and folders from the 'english' folder into your own language folder in order for MedMod to work. 7) Start Modswapper. You should now see the option "Med Pack II v2.2: Crusade! update" next to the existing options ("Original Game" and maybe others, depending on what other mods you already installed). Whenever you want to start a new MedMod game or continue an old game that was started with the MedMod, you will have to choose this option in ModSwapper before you hit 'Launch' to start the game. Note that there is also another option for MedMod visible in ModSwapper: "Med Pack II v2.2 Large: Crusade! update" - see the MedMod readme files for details on this (essentially it let's you play on bigger maps with more opponents) - suffice to say that you shouldn't use it for the Tournament). 8) It is advised to open the chat menu (with the '-key) and type /reloadslic immediately after loading the downloaded save game. This will prevent weird messages (such as "noyon") from showing up. This only needs to happen once per game and only for the tournament games and other games which you receive from other people, not after subsequent saves/reloads or with new games started with the MedMod. 9) If you have any questions, comments, problems, suggestions, etc related to this mod, feel free to let the creator hexagonian (and everyone else) know in the Cradle v1.32 forum thread. Zipped files The savegames for the Tournaments, as well as most of the mods that these Tournament games are played with, are 'zipped', i.e. they are stored in a special (compressed) format to make them smaller and thus faster to download. In order to be able to use such files you need to 'unzip' them. Some Windows versions have an unzip tool by default (one of these is Windows XP Home Edition - and probably other versions of XP as well). If this is the case on your system, you can right-click the file in Explorer, select 'Extract All...', click 'Next', select the folder where you want the files to be unzipped, click 'Next', wait for extraction and click 'Finish'. If this doesn't work on your system (or you don't like how it works), you should download a program like WinZip from a place like www.downloads.com. At the time of writing, the latest version of WinZip (v8.1) could be downloaded from here (note that this version and link might be obsolete when you read this since newer versions are being developed all the time). To be able to participate in the Tournaments and download mods, you should download and install a zip program like the aforementioned WinZip and the above trick of right-clicking a zip file in Explorer should work, although the precise name of the option you need to select might differ. In case of WinZip, you can either choose 'Extract to...' or 'Extract to <pathname>'. In the latter case WinZip will create a new folder with the name of the zip file in the current folder (or reuse the existing folder if such a folder is already there) and extract the files in there. In the former case a window will pop up in which you can select a location to which the files need to be extracted. After that, press 'OK' and wait until the extraction process is complete. Of course, different programs work in different ways, so the precise names of options/buttons and the precise orders of screens will differ if you use a different program or a different version of WinZip, but whatever you use, the procedure should be similar to the procedure described above for the standard Windows XP tool and WinZip v8.1. (Note that extraction of files, in case of a mod usually means extraction into your main CtP2 folder, and in case of a savegame it usually means extraction into your savegame folder: ctp2_program\ctp2\saves\games).
When you want to upload the finished Tournament savegames, so that you can be included in the rankings, you'll have to 'zip' these files yourself. With WinZip, you can simply right-click the file in Explorer and select the option 'Add to Zip' and, after choosing a name and location for the zipfile, the file(s) will compressed to a zipfile. With the default Windows (XP) tool, you can right-click as well, but you need to select 'Copy To...' and then 'Compressed Folder'. After this a zip file with the same name as the unzipped file but with the extention '.zip' will be created. After this zipping of the file, press the 'Post Reply' button on the thread on the Apolyton Forums where you want to submit the file to, and a screen will come up with a number of fields. Right above the 'Submit Reply' button near the bottom there is an 'Attach file' option. Press the 'Browse...' button and select your file. After writing your reply (which should at least mention the type of victory that you accomplished and optionally other info/comments) and hitting the 'Submit Reply' button, your reply will be posted with the zipfile attached to it.
